What and When is Black Friday?

Traditionally American, Black Friday has a very negative origin when in 1890, two investors drove up the price of gold and caused the stock market to crash. It wasn’t until the 1980s that it garnered its more positive spin as a way for Americans to turn their losses into profit on the Friday after American Thanksgiving Day (which always falls on a Thursday). So it was with turning losses (red) into profits (black) that they coined the term Black Friday for this day of shopping bargains. What started in the US has since spread worldwide to become a pre-holiday season phenomenon, where retailers the world-over offer customers offers and deals on popular products.

Black Friday 2021 is on Friday 26 November, but many retailers have already started offering deals online and here in the UK – with major retailers already offering deals throughout November.

What and When is Cyber Monday?

History gave us Black Friday, and the age of the Internet gave us Cyber Monday, its promotional sibling, where all those deals and offers roll over throughout the weekend and spill onto Monday. This year, Cyber Monday falls on 29 November. Always landing on the Monday following American Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday quickly became the online equivalent to Black Friday. With the rise of online purchasing, both days are merging in popularity and customers have access to even more deals.

Some retailers have separate Cyber Monday deals, while some extend their existing ones through to Monday. Digital Spy and Tom’s Guide are some great places to keep your eye out for deals this Cyber Monday.

How do I find the best Black Friday deals?

A great place to start is directly on your favourite brand’s website or social media. There will be banners about sales on their website or posts. Visit websites like Black Friday Sale, Cosmopolitan, Radio Times, or Tech Radar, who have done the groundwork for you and listed the different retailer’s deals and deals based on product category.
